POWERS

PURCHASED POWERS

🎲 Slightly improbable misfortune. This will affect gacha results and give a -1 to all side quest rolls. (1 point)

🔍 Detect if something/someone is magic and general information on element-type and strength. (2 points)

POSSESSION

• Possessed by Charon, ferryman of the underworld.

• Every few days, Nick is required to seek out an echo/ghost/spirit and banish it back to the spirit realm. The longer he waits, the more disoriented and scattered he becomes.

• The more powerful the spirit is, the more time he can buy for himself before he has to reap again. For example, exorcising a bunch of echoes might only give him a few days until he has to do it again, while banishing an extremely powerful spirit monster might give him a few weeks of relief.

Nick was once an aspiring writer attempting to find his big break. When his current career prospects weren't quite working out, a long-time friend, Casey Chen, offered him a job to become his partner at his private investigation firm. Running out of funds and several months behind rent, Nick reluctantly accepted, despite his inexperience. He quickly found that he had a knack for investigation, and took on his new role in life in stride.

The years passed, and certain patterns emerged. Casey was good at being the ‘face’ of the duo, chatting up people for information and charming the pants off them. Nick was good at keeping to himself, blending in among the crowd and escaping notice. Others often regarded Casey as the ‘leader’ with Nick as his ‘sidekick’, which greatly irritated Nick. Though they often clashed over personality differences and other minor arguments, it was undeniable that they worked better together.

Then, Casey died.

Nick doesn’t quite remember what happened–they were on a standard job, things shouldn’t have gone south. The two of them were staking out a warehouse, waiting for their mark. A crash, a loud BOOM, a blinding light--and then, just like that, Nick was lying face up in a dumpster, bloodied and bruised and sore. A woman named Artemis happened to see him and took him to the hospital before he bled to death.

Following his near-death experience, Nick was disoriented. The police ruled Casey’s death to be a freak accident caused by an explosion in the warehouse. Nick didn’t agree. He sought out more information on what had happened that night, but to his frustration, every trail he pursued eventually went cold. To make matters worse, his memories were scattered, and he began to see the dead. Ghosts called out to him, pleading him to help them, to hear what they had to say. He initially tried to ignore the apparitions, but no matter what he tried, they never went away.

Eventually, after years of chasing dead ends and false leads, he gave up on trying to find anything else on Casey’s death. He began to take on cases again, though he found himself easily frustrated by situations that Casey would have been able to resolve quickly. As he worked, he realized that the ghosts would provide him with valuable information that helped his investigations. He initially dismissed this as a trauma-tinged manifestation of his intuition, unwilling to believe that there was some sort of paranormal explanation.

But of course, they were real ghosts. Nick would only come to realize this truth after he was nearly killed a second time. He was about to be shot by a mysterious assailant when a ferocious beast leapt into his path and saved him. The beast revealed that she was a werewolf, and, through conversation, Nick realized that this was the same woman who saved him from the dumpster years ago. More importantly, the supernatural was real.

It was then that Nick began to think back upon the details of Casey's death. Things that didn't make sense at the time suddenly began to worm their way back into his mind, like picking up pieces of a puzzle that had been lost under the couch for years. He asked Artemis to show him what else lay beyond the veil, and she accepted. There was a deeper conspiracy at hand, and he would try to unravel it--even if it killed him.
